DE07 Strelasund

Germany’s largest cable-stayed bridge was opened to the public on the 20th of October 2007 by the federal chancellor Mrs. Merkel. The consortium 2. Strelasund-Crossing, originally made up of Walter Bau AG and the Max Bögl construction firm, started construction works in October 2004. After the insolvency of the Walter Bau AG, Max Bögl single-handedly continued the project, which had been assigned by DEGES (Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH).

The total construction is approximately 3380 m long paralleling the existing Rügen Dam. Due to different superstructures it is made up of six structures, namely 2 Stralsund approach bridges, the Ziegelgraben bridge, the Dänholm and Strelasund approach bridges and the Strelasund bridge. The mainstay of the construction is 2830 m long and connects to a dam construction of approximately 550 m.

A highlight in engineering is the 600 m long cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Ziegelgraben without supports in 126 and 198 m height at 42 m clearance for ships to pass. Two 128 m high pylons that incorporate the suspension cables give an impressive picture.

The complete construction captivates through outstanding engineering skills and the various architectural styles of the individual bridges are remarkable. Another noteworthy yet unseen feature is the bridge drainage. An uncontrolled drainage into the environment, in this case into the Strelasund, would be impossible because of the pollution through traffic and contaminants in rain.

The original idea to utilize metallic pipes was discarded and HOBAS CC-GRP BridgeLine® Systems won the tender. Höllein, a construction company, conducted the installation of the line. HOBAS CC-GRP BridgeLine® complies with all additional technical contract terms and feature following advantages such as high corrosion resistance, low weight, easy handling and installation, excellent hydraulics, and adaptable coloring.

Economic aspects are a further important criterion since the prices were stable throughout the whole construction period whereas prices for stainless steel rose vigorously. HOBAS CC-GRP BridgeLine® Systems therefore contribute to road safety and environmental protection, even though inconspicuously.
