No Dig Award for the Cergy Pontoise Trenchless Multitechnique Project with HOBAS CC-GRP Pipe Systems

During the XXIInd International No Dig Conference and Exhibition in Hamburg HOBAS of the Year 2004 Award for the entry “Trenchless Multitechnique Project”. HOBAS France delivered a total of approximately 900 m of HOBAS CCGRP Pipes. The installation was performed in 5 months only.

The owner of this project, “Communité d’Agglomération de Cergy-Pontoise”, is the association of eleven villages and towns about 30 kilometers northwest from Paris. This is a new urban area that has been growing rapidly during the last 30 years. The owner runs the main sewage and drainage network as well as a treatment plant for 200,000 inhabitants.

The municipalities were concerned with facing the present and preparing for future growth. So they decided to build a sewer transfer collector that would transport the effluents and wastewater to the treatment plant of Cergy-Neuville. One of the main requirements to the construction of the sewer was the ability to withstand pH values below 4. Only HOBAS CC-GRP Pipe Systems were able to satisfy this specification.

France together with the main contractor DLE was honored by the ISTT receiving the Project The project was designed, tendered, awarded and initiated in 2003 to be completed at the beginning of 2004. It included the rehabilitation of an existing section of the main sewer and the construction of new sections. The first parts of the new collector were located in the valley whereas the effluents in the last section have to be pumped up onto a plateau.

Only one section was regarded as an obvious candidate for the use of trenchless technology because it crossed a railway track. All the remaining sections could have been constructed by means of traditional trenches. Nevertheless, the owner was highly concerned to protect the environment and to avoid any inconvenience to the neighbors as much as possible. They decided to carry out the project using HOBAS CC-GRP Pipe Systems so as to use trenchless technologies to a maximum extent.

As described in the following, the project combines major disciplines of pipe technology within one operation, which is quite unique in France:

· Rehabilitation by lining techniques
· Microtunnelling
· Open cut

The choice was made in favor of HOBAS CC-GRP SewerLine. That was the solution that guaranteed respect for the environment, high quality of installation, fast execution of the project, and helped to avoid inconvenience to the local infrastructure.
