Descubierto para fines industriales a principios del siglo XX, estos materiales se utilizaron primeramente para el aislamiento de casas. La matriz polim\u00e9rica suele ser de epoxi, vinil\u00e9ster, o de poli\u00e9ster. La resina aporta resistencia al medioambiente y qu\u00edmica al producto y es la matriz que aglutina las fibras en la estructura del laminado, adem\u00e1s de definir la forma de una pieza de PRFV. Las fibras de vidrio aportan resistencia al compuesto. Pueden disponerse de forma aleatoria, u orientarse de un modo concreto. El tipo m\u00e1s com\u00fan de fibra de vidrio que se usa para el PRFV es el vidrio de clase E, que es vidrio de aluminoborosilicato.
